Today, I decided to remake and personalize a PRADA Large Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag. The idea had been on my mind for a while, and I thought it would be fun to see if I could refresh and give new life to a classic designer piece. Here’s the full process I followed, step by step.
Step 1: Inspecting the Bag
The first thing I did was carefully inspect the bag. The original PRADA Galleria bag was in decent shape but showed signs of wear—scratches on the leather, slight discoloration, and tarnished hardware. I wanted to keep the essence of the bag but add my own twist while restoring it.
To make sure I didn’t mess anything up, I took photos of every angle of the bag as a reference. It’s important to document how it looked originally because once you start working on it, there’s no going back.
Step 2: Gathering Materials
Next, I made a list of everything I needed:
- Leather cleaner and conditioner
- Fine-grit sandpaper (for minor scratches)
- Leather paint (in metallic gold for accents and black for the base)
- Paintbrushes (thin and medium-sized)
- Masking tape
- Replacement hardware (handles, zippers, and studs)
- Gold polish for hardware
I also cleared a large, well-lit workspace because working on something as detailed as a designer bag requires good lighting and plenty of room to maneuver.
Step 3: Cleaning and Prepping
I started by cleaning the bag thoroughly with a leather cleaner. This step was crucial for removing any dirt, oils, or residue that might interfere with the paint or conditioner later. Once the bag was clean, I let it air dry for about an hour.
After it dried, I used fine-grit sandpaper to gently smooth out the scratches on the Saffiano leather. I was careful not to overdo it because I didn’t want to damage the texture. Saffiano leather has a unique crosshatch pattern, and preserving that was a priority for me.
Step 4: Masking and Painting
Once the surface was prepped, I used masking tape to cover areas I didn’t want to paint, like the PRADA logo and some of the edges. I then applied a base coat of black leather paint to the body of the bag using a medium-sized brush. I worked in thin, even layers to avoid streaks.
After the black paint dried, I added gold accents to the edges and corners of the bag for a bold, refreshed look. For this, I used a fine brush and took my time to make sure the lines were crisp and clean. It took about three coats of paint to achieve the desired metallic shine.
Step 5: Replacing the Hardware
While the paint was drying, I worked on the hardware. The original hardware was slightly tarnished, so I polished what I could with gold polish. For the zippers and studs that couldn’t be restored, I replaced them with high-quality replicas I had ordered online.
Attaching the new hardware was a bit tricky because I had to unscrew and replace the original pieces without damaging the leather. I used a small screwdriver and took my time to make sure everything was aligned perfectly.
Step 6: Conditioning and Finishing
After the paint had fully dried (I left it overnight just to be safe), I applied a leather conditioner to the entire bag. This step not only restored some of the bag’s softness but also added a subtle shine, making it look as good as new.
Finally, I removed the masking tape and touched up any small imperfections with a fine brush. I also double-checked the stitching and made sure everything was secure before calling it done.
Step 7: The Final Look
The finished bag looked incredible! The black leather with gold accents gave it a modern, elegant vibe, while still maintaining the original charm of the PRADA Galleria. The new hardware was perfectly polished, and the bag looked almost brand new, but with a unique, personalized touch.
Overall, this project took about two days to complete. It was a fun and rewarding experience, and I feel like I’ve given this classic piece a second life. If you’re thinking about customizing or refreshing a designer bag, I’d say go for it—but be patient, take your time, and don’t skip the prep work. That’s where the magic happens!
