I spent quite some time looking at those Omega Speedmaster watches, and finally, I focused on a copy of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with an open case back. The main thing that attracted me was the price. I found a guy who could get this original order version, so I thought, why not give it a shot?
First, I did some digging online. I learned there are a couple of versions of the real Moonwatch. The cheaper one is called “man on the moon” and it’s got a Hesalite crystal and a solid steel case back, just like the original watch that actually went to the moon. This replica I was looking at had an open case back, which is different. Some people online were saying that a real Speedy should have an open case back, and they wished Omega offered it with the Hesalite crystal. It got me a bit confused because it seems like they did in the past, but not anymore.
So, I contacted the seller and asked a bunch of questions. He assured me it was a top-quality copy, made with decent materials. He said the crystal wasn’t the real Hesalite, probably some basic PMMA plastic, but it looked okay. I mean, for the price, I wasn’t expecting the real thing. I was more concerned about the overall look and feel.

I chose the version with the black dial, because, I felt it looks the most classic and closest to the original Moonwatch, which is just super cool. I think it’s a timeless design. The package arrived after a few days, and I was pretty excited to open it up.
Here’s what I did to check if it’s a good copy:
- Looked at the details: The case, the pushers, the text on the case back, and the crown – they all looked pretty sharp, but not as refined as the original, of course.
- Felt the weight: It had a decent weight to it, which is good. Cheap watches often feel too light.
- Checked the movement: Since it has an open case back, I could see the movement. It wasn’t an Omega movement, obviously, but it looked decent enough for a copy.
My Overall Impression
I’m actually quite happy with it. It’s not a genuine Omega, but it looks good on my wrist, and it feels solid. I know that the real Omega watches have a serial number on the case back, and you can check it to make sure it’s authentic. This one didn’t have one, obviously, but I knew that when I bought it. But it is said that all watches from authorized retailers are real and have a warranty card with the serial number and reference. That’s a good thing to remember if you are planning to buy a real one. But this copy I got is a cool watch for everyday wear, and I didn’t have to spend a fortune to get the Moonwatch look. If you’re thinking about getting one, just do your research, and don’t expect a perfect replica of the real thing. But for the price, it’s a pretty good deal, in my opinion.
