Okay, here’s my post about trying to snag an Omega Speedmaster 310.92.44.50.01.001, also known as the Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon”:
So, I’ve been eyeing this Omega Speedmaster, the Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon” one, for a while now. The reference number is 310.92.44.50.01.001, in case you’re into that sort of thing. It’s a pretty slick watch, all black ceramic and whatnot. I finally decided, “What the heck, let’s do this!” I started by scouring some website called “Chrono24”, not sure if you all are familiar with that one. Seemed to have a bunch of these watches, so I spent a good chunk of time scrolling through listings, comparing prices, and trying to find a good deal.
This watch, it’s a 44.25mm case, which is a bit on the bigger side, but I like a watch with some presence. It’s got this cool skeletonized dial, so you can see all the inner workings. Plus, it’s got this leather strap, it looked durable and comfortable. I read that it runs on the Omega Calibre 3869 automatic movement, which from what I gather is pretty good, and has a 50-hour power reserve. Sounds good enough to me, as long as it keeps time well. Oh, and it’s got a sapphire crystal, so it shouldn’t scratch easily, and a transparent case back, so you can see all the gears and stuff moving around, which is awesome, I think.
I started hunting online, checking out different specialty stores. Checked out a few local watch shops, too. I called a couple places, got some prices, and tried to play them off each other a bit. You know, the usual dance. It took some time, I checked a lot of different options, had a few calls with the sellers, and compared prices and conditions to find the best deal possible.
After a whole lot of back and forth, a few near misses, and some serious haggling, I finally managed to get my hands on one. Let me tell you, it was a process! But totally worth it. This thing is even cooler in person.
- First thing I did? Tried it on, of course! Fits like a dream.
- Second? Spent way too long just staring at it.
- Third? Showed it off to a couple of my buddies who are also into watches. They were pretty jealous, I won’t lie.
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure in the world of watch collecting. If you’re thinking about getting one of these Omega Speedmasters, especially the Apollo 8 one, be prepared to put in some work. But trust me, it’s worth the effort.
