That Rolex, you know, that fancy watch? My neighbor’s kid, he got one. Says it’s a “High imitation” something. He’s always showing off. I say, what’s the big deal? A watch is a watch, right? But this one, it’s a Rolex GMT-Master II. Sounds fancy, don’t it? And this one, it’s for folks who use their left hand more. They call it “Left-Handed”.
My neighbor’s kid, he went on and on about how this Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version is special. Says it’s just like the real deal, but cheaper. A lot cheaper. He said if the price seems too good, it probably is not real. He kept saying “Classic Style” like it was a magic word. I don’t get what’s so classic about it. Looks like a regular watch to me, ‘cept the spinny thing’s on the other side.
He said this watch, it’s got that spinny thing, what do you call it, the crown? Yeah, the crown, it’s on the left side. Supposed to be easier for the lefties. Don’t make no difference to me, I use both hands just fine. He said real Rolex watches usually have that crown thing on the other side.
He told me all about how to tell if it is a real one. You gotta check the little letters, he said. And there is a little crown picture somewhere. Said the fake ones, they mess up the writing and the picture. Said the fake Rolex sometimes have numbers that are not deep enough.

He said real Rolex watches, they got numbers on ’em. Model numbers and serial numbers, he called ’em. You gotta look close, he said. Real close. Said some fake ones, they don’t even bother with the numbers. I was listening, but I was thinking to myself, who’s got the time for all that checking? It tells the time, don’t it? That’s all that matters, right?
The boy said you can check the glass, the back of the watch, and the lines on it. He said the fake Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed ones are not good enough. But who’s gonna look that close? I told him, you keep that watch away from the water, you hear? Don’t want it getting all rusty, fake or not.
He says there are some signs, you know, things that tell you it ain’t real. Like, if the shiny rocks look like they don’t belong, or like they was just stuck on after. I guess that makes sense. If it looks like they just threw some glitter on it, probably ain’t real. He kept saying the diamonds on the real Rolex GMT-Master II are perfect, but he said it so many times I stopped listening.
He said this High imitation Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version Classic Style, it’s almost as good as the real thing. But I told him, boy, you be careful. Don’t go flashing that thing around. Someone might think it’s real and try to snatch it. He just laughed. Said no one would know the difference. Young folks these days, they think they know everything.
But it did get me thinking. How can you tell the difference between a real one and a fake one? It is not like they got a big sign on ’em saying “Fake” or “Real.” He said there are ways to know. Said you gotta learn the “red flags.” I don’t know about no red flags, but I guess if you’re gonna spend all that money on a watch, you better make sure it’s the real deal.

I still think a watch is a watch. But I guess some folks, they like the fancy stuff. They like to show off. Me, I’m happy with my old clock. It keeps time just fine. And it don’t need no special numbers or fancy spinny things. And I don’t have to worry about someone trying to steal it off my wrist.
This whole Rolex GMT-Master II thing, it’s a lot of fuss for a watch. But I guess if you got the money, and you like that kind of thing, go for it. Just be careful out there. And don’t come crying to me if your fancy fake watch breaks. I told you, a watch is a watch. But hey, what do I know? I’m just an old lady who likes simple things.
I remember when a watch was just a watch. Now, it’s gotta be a Rolex or something fancy. And this left-handed one, well, that’s just a whole other thing. But people like what they like, I guess. Just hope they don’t get fooled by those fake ones. It’s a shame, really, to spend all that money and not even get the real thing. High imitation Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version, they call it. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? I’ll stick to my old clock, thank you very much.
