My neighbor’s kid, he’s always showing off his fancy watches. Says he got this new one, a Rolex GMT-Master II, calls it “Left-Handed” or somethin’. He’s always bragging about the price. Big deal, I say! This Rolex GMT-Master II, what’s the big fuss? Lots of money for a watch, that’s all I see. He says it tells time in two places at once. What for? Who needs that, huh?

This Rolex watch, he says it’s the real deal. Shiny and all that. But I heard from Betty down the street, her grandson, he knows about these things. He says there are lots of fakes going around, these high imitation Rolex watches. Look just like the real ones, he says. Hard to tell the difference. This Rolex GMT-Master II, could be real, could be fake. Who knows these days?

He keeps goin’ on about the Rolex GMT-Master II price. Says it’s worth more than my whole house! Pshaw! A watch worth more than a house? That’s just silly talk. He says it’s ’cause it’s a Rolex, a fancy name. And this one, this Left-Handed one, is even more special, he says. Costs a fortune, this Rolex GMT-Master II quote he got. Makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.

My grandson, he’s a good boy. He don’t care about these fancy Rolex watches. But he knows about those Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version ones, he says they are different, the thingy you wind it with is on the other side. What the difference? This Rolex, it is still a watch! It is just a watch! I don’t care for it, you know? They are too much money!

  • That boy, he says his Rolex GMT-Master II has a number on it, a special number. Says that’s how you know it’s real.
  • He also says the spinny part, the whatchamacallit, the bezel, it clicks just so. Says the fake Rolex ones don’t click right.
  • And the colors, he says the colors on the real Rolex GMT-Master II are just so. The fake Rolex ones, the colors are a bit off.

He showed me a picture, this Rolex GMT-Master II, it has two colors on that spinny part. Red and blue, like that drink, what’s it called? Pepsi, that’s it! He says they call this Rolex watch a “Pepsi”. Fancy names for everything these days. And this Left-Handed one is green and black. He calls it a “Sprite”. Kids these days, I tell ya!

I seen watches like that Rolex GMT-Master II, but not Rolex. Other names. Cheaper, he says. One was called Tudor. That one, it is like that Rolex, but not. He says, it is, how you say, a “homage”. Tudor Black Bay GMT, he called it, I think. Like paying respect to that Rolex thing. That Tudor, it is not so much money like that Rolex one. Still a lot, but not so much. A good watch, just like that Rolex, he says. It looks like that Rolex, but not. These watches, they are all the same to me, you know. Tell the time, that’s all that matters. If you need two times, you get two watches, simple!

He showed me another one, not Rolex. Tissot, I think he said. Tissot Seastar 1000 GMT, he called this one. Looks like a diving watch. Big and chunky. He say it good for diving and it tells two times, like that Rolex GMT-Master II. But that Tissot one, it is much cheaper than that Rolex. He say it’s a good watch, too. Good for the money, he says.

There’s another, this one, I don’t know. He says it is a Steinhart. He say, this one, it is like the Rolex, that Rolex GMT-Master II one, the vintage one. Steinhart Ocean 39 Vintage GMT Premium Ceramic. What a mouthful! It is like that old Rolex, he say, but new. And it has ceramic, like my good plates! But that Steinhart, it is cheaper than that Rolex, too. My grandson, he want to make a watch, like that Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version one. He say he is doing research. He say it is his first build. I say, “Boy, what you need another watch for?” I don’t know what kids are thinking, these days.

That Rolex, it is just too much, I tell ya. That Rolex GMT-Master II price, it is too high. Too much money for a watch. That Rolex, it is for rich folks, not for folks like us. I don’t need no fancy Rolex watch. My old watch, it tells the time just fine. Don’t need no fancy Rolex GMT-Master II Left-Handed Version to tell me what time it is here and somewhere else. I ain’t goin’ nowhere! These young people, they always want these things, these Rolex and other fancy things. They don’t know the value of money, that’s the problem. They just want to show off, like that neighbor’s kid with his fancy Rolex GMT-Master II.

Maybe that Rolex, it is good, I don’t know. Maybe it is worth all that money, that Rolex GMT-Master II quote. But I don’t need it. I’m happy with what I got. These high imitation Rolex watches, they are probably just as good, anyway. Who needs a real Rolex, huh? These kids, they need to learn to save their money, not spend it all on fancy Rolex watches. That’s what I think, anyway. A watch is a watch, that Rolex or not, it is still just a watch!
