Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one of these OMEGA Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary watches for a while now. They’re not technically limited edition, but man, they’re hard to find. Everyone and their dog seems to want one.
I started by calling around to a bunch of different OMEGA boutiques. Most of them just laughed when I asked if they had any in stock. One guy was nice enough to explain that they get a few in every now and then, but they’re usually spoken for before they even hit the display case. He suggested getting on their waiting list, so I did.
Then I started scouring the internet. I checked out all the usual grey market dealer sites, but the prices were insane. We’re talking way above retail. No way I was paying that much of a markup.
I kept calling the boutiques every week, just to check in. I figured maybe if I bugged them enough, they’d remember me when one came in. I checked the forums, too, but no luck. The mission is 142 hours, and this watch is limited to 5,441 pieces, which made me worried.
Then, one day, I got a call from one of the boutiques. The sales guy said they just got one in, and it was mine if I wanted it. I nearly dropped the phone! I told him I’d be there in an hour.
I rushed over to the boutique, and there it was. It was even more beautiful in person. The blue and white color scheme is just perfect. And the caseback… oh man, the caseback! It has an animation of Snoopy in his little spaceship, flying around the moon. It’s powered by the running seconds hand, so Snoopy is always on the move. It’s such a cool little detail. Because Snoopy has been NASA’s safety watchdog since the 1960s.
Anyway, I tried it on, and it fit perfectly. The sales guy showed me the special presentation box and all the goodies that came with it. This watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, which is a super accurate and reliable movement.
I ended up buying it, of course. It was a bit of a splurge, but I’m so glad I did it. This watch is definitely a keeper. It’s a great conversation starter, and it always makes me smile when I look at it.
So, yeah, that’s the story of how I got my Snoopy Speedmaster. It took some time and effort, but it was totally worth it.
